Games released before 2000 (NES era, SNES era, PSX/N64 era) that have an Update with some availability on modern platforms (PS4/5, XBox, Switch, iOS/Android, PC). I am focusing just on the Japanese side of things and ignoring all of the various games acquired during their acquisitions of Western studios and publishers. There’s so many overlapping lists with blurry definitions that I guarantee there are shitload of errors. I generally use the term “Update” for anything that goes beyond the bland ROM dumps, and for the rest of this thread I will tend to use that term to a combination term rather than having to write out Remake/Remaster/Reimagining constantly. This is always going to be debatable, but there are clearly a handful of games of that are far beyond what is normally expected out of a true remake. Games that have significant fundamental overhauls of the plot and game systems, especially games that manage to change sub-genre. Reimagining - Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Minstrel Song, SaGa 3, Lufia 2 DS, Sword of Mana.Remake - Trials of Mana, Dragon Quest 5, Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD.Remaster - Romancing SaGa 2 / 3, SaGa Frontier, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2.The content is overwhelmingly duplication of the previous version, with some new content or features added. Port / Enhanced Port - There’s so few straight ports that are relevant here we are mostly going to talk about Enhanced Ports.Enhanced ROM Dump - Mostly the same as the ROM Dump category, except there’s been some additional work added like connecting to a proper save system or fastforward that does not mangle sound effects and music.“ROM Dump” - Virtual Console, SNES Classic, Switch Online archives, PSN.There’s quite a few products that are debatable which category they fall within, and those are almost always between two adjacent categories. I’d argue that there’s about six different classifications for revivals that exist on a spectrum. However, this place tends to be extremely negative so focuses like 90% of its posts on the absolute worst.įirst, some terminology. Of all of the major RPG publishers, Square Enix is consistently the best at keeping their huge library of RPG classics in rotation on modern platforms, and goes well beyond the efforts, both in quality and number, any other series or publisher manages. That type of “company needs to do X!” or yelling that they suck usually implies that the company is lagging behind the industry standards, but I think the opposite is true. (This is my first thread in like a decade so parts may be an incoherent mess)Įvery time there is a remaster or remake announced by Square Enix, there’s a way of “We need a remake of X in Y style!” thread, or several, or general complaining about how Square Enix suck at doing remakes and remasters, or just general batshit insane vitriol that is totally out of line with the actual quality and availability of their games. ![]()
